Hungry Hearts Anzia Yezierska 9781117548166 Books Reviews
it could have been more intersting
Amazing picture of immigrant life and travails. This author captures the ordeals, frustrations and yearnings like no other I have read before.
I loved it!
Entertaining collection of stories about Jewish women living on the lower East side, working in sweatshops, trying to build relationships. A good discovery...
Interesting stories of early Jewish immigrants and their struggles to make it in New York. A book that you can pick up anytime.
It gets boring as you go but youbecoe satisfied with the ending.
Universally familiar, Anzia Yezierska's short story themes continue to fascinate across generations because they so precisely expose the ubiquitous frustration of intelligent creative people who are metaphorically snagged by circumstances of birth, chance, or both, and mercilessly flung like a handful of dusty pebbles into the lower echelon dustbin of our ubiquitous and nobly struggling lower class. These pre-depression short stories mirror the life and struggles of the author who immigrated from "...the Russian part of Poland..." to New York City and clawed her way to a published work of intensely fascinating quality fiction in a pre-depression era.
Speaking of quality fiction, read a free sample and see my review of Everybaby, a collection of entertaining hip flash fiction by Anna Krushelnitskaya, whose short stories I have been reading for the last ten years. She's oh, so seriously good! Funny, witty, and touching, the flash fiction stories in "EVERYBABY" share themes of "...love hate new, old, [and] dying relationships...." Don't have a ? I don't either but was able to download EVERYBABY to my laptop and iPad in seconds. I think you can download to your phone Also. Spent only $2.99 and am enjoying flash fiction at it's best!
Amazing short stories, full of heart and grit. A new learning experience for me about immigrant Jews from Russia & Poland. Heart breaking and lovely all at once.
